My great aunt was a Jewish dairy farmer. The farm was in Middle Village, Queens. I spent time there when I was a kid. Even though the farm was close to Brooklyn where the rest of my family lived, it seemed like the trip took much longer. A lot of well known mafiosos were buried in the big Catholic cemetery next to the farm.
My adorable husband was brought up in Chicago and our motto has always been, "Vote early and OFTEN. " Because we can, we vote on the first day of early voting and then show up on Election Day on the off chance that they forgot. They never forget.
I hear there's a mini-revival in Roxbury, with a couple of small new hotels. We liked to ski there in winter and swim in the pond in the summer. We were just up the hill from Benny's Pizza. Happy days, when the children were young!
Once removed, maybe. Sez here: Leonard Bernstein was born on August 25, 1918, in Lawrence, Massachusetts ... His father, Sam Bernstein, was a Russian immigrant who in his native Ukraine was destined to become a rabbi. Once he arrived and settled on New York City’s Lower East Side, the elder Bernstein took up working as a fish cleaner. He eventually got a job sweeping floors in his uncle Henry’s barbershop and then landed a position stocking wigs for a dealer. Sam eventually built a rather profitable business distributing beauty products.
According to Carl's memoir "Loyalties," Alfred and Sylvia Bernstein were Communist Party members in the mid-1940s and endured long persecution by the government for their political beliefs.
Politics reminds me of pro wrestling for the WWF. Show and no substance.
Thank you. Please post writ about wrong candidate winning again. Incomprehensible to me.

Beautiful! Excellent distraction from constant worry.
Thank you for the positive message about community!
Hi Joyce
My great aunt was a Jewish dairy farmer. The farm was in Middle Village, Queens. I spent time there when I was a kid. Even though the farm was close to Brooklyn where the rest of my family lived, it seemed like the trip took much longer. A lot of well known mafiosos were buried in the big Catholic cemetery next to the farm.
Perfect timing, Joyce!
Needed something to stem the panic.
Thank you!
Reading this was a lovely distraction from thinking about the election, which, if there is any justice in this world, Kamala will win by a landslide.
Wonderful story. Great to read on Election Day. Your story is America. Thank you.
This was lovely to read. Thank you for sharing such a wonderful memory.
Love this, Joyce! I spent 2 nights in Fleischmanns this fall (in the area for a wedding). What a pretty place to be from!
Fantastic. Thanks, neighbor.
My adorable husband was brought up in Chicago and our motto has always been, "Vote early and OFTEN. " Because we can, we vote on the first day of early voting and then show up on Election Day on the off chance that they forgot. They never forget.
Simply wonderful.
I, too, like to vote on the day itself and somehow regret that Election Day changed to “the last day you can vote.”
Continuing: Also wanted to mention that I love that area, having had a house in Roxbury NY for 25 years.
Aaah, well then you must have passed Wadler Bros. on Route 28. The family realized what was happening to the hotel business and moved on.
I hear there's a mini-revival in Roxbury, with a couple of small new hotels. We liked to ski there in winter and swim in the pond in the summer. We were just up the hill from Benny's Pizza. Happy days, when the children were young!
watched "all the president's men" the other night and it truly calmed me down...was Bernstein from the Catskills? 🤣

interesting....nothing about Carl? 😉
Appleton,
I don't know where Carl grew up, but I believe he was a red diaper baby.
Sorry about the misreading (not a morning person). Re Carl: He grew up in DC, I believe.. Alfred Bernstein, a graduate of Columbia University law school in his native New York, came to Washington in 1937. https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/local/2003/03/02/alfred-bernstein-dies
